Meet Dr. Melissa

Aloha,

I was raised on Maui and graduated from

St. Anthony High School. My undergraduate work was completed at the University of Hawaii at Hilo where

I received my BA in Biology. I received my Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree in 1990 from Creighton University’s Dental School in Omaha, Nebraska.

I am an affiliate member of the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and a member of the American and Hawaii Dental Association respectively. I continue to broaden my knowledge on a yearly basis so that I may help your child in the best way possible.

During Dental School, I completed a two month volunteer program in the Dominican Republic. There, in very rustic conditions, I delivered dental care to the villagers. It was in the Dominican Republic, under the guidance of one of my professors, that I decided pediatrics was my calling. Upon returning home to Hawai’i, I was hired by a pediatric dentist and have been working with children and special needs adults since then.

Kona has been home since 1990 when I returned to Hawai’i after school.

I have 3 grown children with my husband Gabriel Uy, D.D.S. Evan is a Hawaii County firefighter, Dane, happily lives and works in New Zealand and Lailan is currently a Junior in college. As a side note, I am also a certified floral designer.

My “secret” job is as a certified floral designer where I have been honored to be the florist for some of my former patients.

After 3 decades of being a dentist for the children of Kona, I would say the biggest compliments for me and my staff is seeing the “next” generation. It is a privilege to be a part of your children’s lives!

To our families:

Thank you for your patience as we do our best to address parent & patient concerns at this time.

Our office has always upheld the highest standards to keep our patients safe. Dental offices are generally held to pretty high standards as far as sterilization, disinfection and patient & staff protection. There have been some changes that are now practiced that are specific to COVID response. Click here for more. If you’d like specific updates, please do not hesitate to call our office for a copy of this list.

Screening our patients and families the day before and the day of your visit is now standard. As the government changes its rulings on a daily basis, we do not. We are a health office and so follow science-based information. We do this to keep our patients & staff as safe as possible. We adhere to quarantine guidelines whether or not the state is doing so. If you or anyone in your home have traveled off island within the past 14 days, we kindly ask that you reschedule your child’s appointment.

As for school schedules, my staff and I understand the frustration with ever changing school schedules. Most of us have children at some level of school as well. We are trying to be as accommodating as possible with sticking to our core scheduling policies. We also follow guidelines suggested by the American Dental and Pediatric Dental Societies respectively.

We appreciate your confidence in our office as we make your child’s dental health our top priority.
